Artist Profile:
Michael Chang
Michael Chang is originally from Seattle and began training as a classical violinist at the age of 5. He played in a variety of orchestras and symphonies, and while studying at university, he found himself caught up in the Seattle grunge movement of the early 90s. His band, Like Rain, was nominated for Best New Band alongside Nirvana in the 1991 Northwest Area Music Awards, and he has shared the stage with the likes of Soundgarden, Warren Zevon, and They Might Be Giants. Just as the rock scene exploded in Seattle, he was hired to play in a local Irish pub, and he spent several years performing Irish ballads in venues all along the West Coast of America. His exposure to this new repertoire piqued a genuine interest in the reels and jigs of traditional music, and in 1999, he traveled to Ireland to learn about “the pure drop” and immerse himself in Galway’s vibrant session scene. He now resides in Galway City and is an active member of the city’s traditional Irish music community. He has several residencies in traditional pubs such as Taaffes, Cookes Thatch, and the Crane Bar, and he has been featured on over 40 Irish albums to date.
