PROPHECY AND PASSION
Our Good Friday concert this year views the events of Christ’s Passion through two lenses: Old Testament prophecy and New Testament narrative. The two central works which give the concert its title are both by German composer, theorist, writer and poet Christoph Demantius (1567–1643): Weissagung des Leiden und Sterben Jesu Christi, and Johannespassion. This Passion setting is the last and finest example of the “motet” passion, and combines ancient style with innovative and colourful treatment of the text. Interspersed in between will be vocal works for solo voices by Hammerschmidt, Schein, Schütz and Scheidt. Collegium will be joined for this performance by six singers from Resurgam, harp (Siobhán Armstrong) and chamber organ (Malcolm Proud).
