Belfast born Kenneth Montgomery has been working with the Orchestra of the 18th Century to great acclaim. He has toured with this orchestra all over Europe. After the orchestras first tour of Korea in June 2015, he conducted the orchestra in Le Nozze di Figaro and in 2017 La Clemenza di Tito. This was chosen Opera of the Year by readers of the site ’Place de L’Opera’.
In season 2019/20 he will do Don Giovanni with The Orchestra of the 18th Century in Belgium and the Netherlands, Carmen with the new National Opera of Ireland and Thaïs in Salt Lake City.
He was principal conductor of the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Radio Choir. He conducted a large number of performances for Dutch radio during his many years with the Orchestra and Choir in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has conducted over a hundred operas from Cavalli to more contemporary composers.
He was the Ulster Orchestra’s Principal Conductor from 2007 to 2010 and before that Principal Guest Conductor.
He has been interim music director at the Santa Fe Opera. He conducted 21 productions since 1982 and is their Conductor Laureate. He was the first artistic director of the Dutch National Opera Academy.
He continues to give conducting masterclasses at the Royal Conservatory The Hague and the Amsterdam Conservatory for their combined National Master Conducting course.
Kenneth was awarded an OBE for services to music in Northern Ireland and an Honorary Doctorate of Literature in Music (DLit(Mus)) from Queen’s UniversityBelfast.
