Cello Ireland


Cello Ireland (Artistic Director Úna Ní Chanainn) was founded in 2014. It is a collective of Irish cellists who collaborate with musicians worldwide. They have performed a varied body of work, including both of Haydn’s Cello Concertos with Daniel Mueller-Schott accompanied by the cello ensemble as well as performances with Hugh Buckley Jazz Quartet as part of Kaleidoscope series and Galway Jazz Festival. They have performed regularly at Spike Alternative Cello Festival with traditional musicians Cormac Begley, Liam O’ Connor, Liam Ó Maonlaí and several singer-songwriter cellists.

Recent performances include:

‘Bowie to Buckley: A World aPa̎rt’ (Sugar Club), performing the music of David Bowie, Hugh Buckley and Arvo Pa̎rt.
‘Mahler Reimagined!’ (Sugar Club), performing brand-new arrangements of Mahler songs by Brian Byrne for cello ensemble and jazz quartet, sung by Cathal Coughlan (Microdisney).

Another collaborator Cello Ireland have had the pleasure of working with is soprano Claudia Boyle, who features in the closing concert of Cellissimo.
