The CELLISSIMO Ambassador Programme
Music for Galway announces a competition for the Galway Cello
The Galway Cello is a unique instrument, fashioned for the cello festival CELLISSIMO from woods mainly grown in Co. Galway. Its most distinguished feature is the emblematic Claddagh Ring on its scroll, making it unmistakably Galway. Music for Galway will loan the cello to a talented Irish based young cellist. This cellist will be selected in the autumn and will become CELLISSIMO ambassador until the second edition of the festival in 2024.
Anna Lardi, Festival Director of CELLISSIMO remarked: “The Galway Cello is a very tangible legacy of CELLISSIMO. Its “parent instrument” is over 300 years old and we hope that our cello, unique in the world with its Claddagh Ring scroll, will survive us all. For now, we are thrilled to place it into the hands of a young and ambitious musician, who will also make his/her name with the use of the Galway Cello.”
The maker of the cello is luthier Kuros Torkzadeh, who built the instrument on the blueprint of the Goore-Booth Stradivarius, a fine Forma B cello made in 1710. Since its completion in 2019, the Galway Cello has been in the hands of many distinguished players including Marc Coppey, Naomi Berrill, Adrian Mantu, Christopher Ellis and Martin Johnston. Naomi Berrill gave the first public performance with the Galway Cello as she opened CELLISSIMO with Fragments, a piece written by Bill Whelan for the occasion. She also took the Galway Cello to schools throughout Co. Galway and the cello met the world by being in concert with world musicians based in the region. Now it is ready to take flight and Music for Galway is looking for a dedicated player who will make use of this great instrument and spread the word about Galway and CELLISSIMO at the same time.
The application deadline is Friday 6 August and auditions will be held on Monday 6 September. Good Luck!
The first edition of CELLISSIMO was presented by Music for Galway and Galway 2020 as part of the European Capital of Culture Programme 2020 and the Galway Cello is sponsored by MJ Conroy.
